Heelys Associated with Injuries in Pre-Teens

A recent article on MSNBC.COMdiscussed the hazards to children of shoes with the wheels in the heel. The most recognized brand of these shoes, Heelys, Inc., have been linked to numerous injuries in young people around the world. Those injuries have ranged from the usual scrapes and bruises to broken bones and head contusions.

To Heelys defense there is a warning sticker on their shoes that proper protection is encouraged, but who heeds those things.

heelys warning label

Here are some questions to ponder:
Are Heelys really any more dangerous than a bicycle or skateboard or trampoline? How many years did it take from the invention of the bicycle for helmets to be a standard piece of equipment when riding? What would the impact be of applying those same safety precautions to Heelys? How many pre-teens are willing to be caught heeling through the Mall with a Heeling Helmet and wrist and knee pads?

As a mode of transportation the use of a Heely is right up there with the Razor Scooter. They are novel ideas that will come and go just as other gimmicks and fashions. In the meantime parents need to educate themselves on what Heelys really are and the inherent hazards associated with them. Then maybe they should contemplate  whether they want their child to be one of these Heelers running down innocent shoppers at the Target or Wal-Mart in their home town.

2011 Camaro Z28 Still in the Works?

We were tipped off by an astute reader to a blog post over at Camaro5.com that reports GM officials strongly hinting that Chevy will indeed produce a Camaro Z28, albeit a couple years out.

This is great news as it seemed like the Z28 model was toast when the stuff really started hitting the fan at GM.

Click here to get the whole story, which is pretty sketchy on details, but heavy on hope.

Ferrari Enzo: Ready And Waiting

When Ferrari put the Enzo out, not everyone with a fat checkbook were allowed to buy it. The requirements were so stiff - you had to have at least two Ferraris and the company must know you personally before you were invited to buy one of the 399 Enzos ever made. Well, a lot has changed since then. All 399 units were snapped up but if you happen to have a million and change right now, you could own this one-of-a-kind super car. It’s up for auction now 800 grand and in three days, she’ll be gone so you better hurry. You’ll get the 650 horsepower V12 with the F1-style transmission and it’s only been used for a shade under 9,000 miles. There are lots of accolades and positive reviews for the Enzo so you know you’re getting only the best if you buy this one. $1,098,000.

Should I Lease or Buy a Car?

When the time comes to get a new car, it is often stressful.  Either our old one died on us, or we want a new one, but need to cough up the money to pay for it which is never easy.  Regardless of your situation, there is often a common question that is asked “Should I lease or buy a car?”  We all think about this, but we’re not sure what we should do.  Both of them are expensive, but which one is better for us?

Leasing:

When you lease a vehicle you will have lower monthly payments, and a lower down payment than you would if you bought.  You can also drive a newer and better car for less, and have lower repair costs because most warranties will cover any issues you may have.  Also, you only pay sales tax on the portion of the car you finance.

Although those may all be advantages, there are some disadvantages as well.  When you turn in the lease you no longer have a car, therefore you need to find another one quickly.  Also, you can only drive so many miles on your lease, and if you go over, you’ll be spending big bucks because of it.  Not to mention, leasing is more expensive in the long run as opposed to driving until your car no longer runs (when you buy.)

Buying:

It is nice to have your own car, this means you can do whatever you want to it, rack up as many miles as you want, and sell it whenever you want.

Although, when you buy a car you will most likely have higher monthly payments, and you’re usually required to put down more money for the down payment.  Not to mention, any repairs that your car needs will need to be out of your pocket once your warranty ends.

Deciding whether you want to buy or lease is really a tough decision.  They are both expensive in the long run, and they both have many disadvantages and advantages.  Really, you just need to see what matters most to you, and what you can better afford.  Consider these ideas above for guidance.

Congress isn’t totally against collector cars. Maybe.

appreciation?

Yeah, I’ve been busting on Congress hard lately for their various attempts to pass a cash for clunkers program, and I will continue to do so either until it’s defeated or I expire. But a few representatives and senators do seem to understand and appreciate what the owners of classic and collector cars go through.

First, Senator John Tester, a Democratic Senator from Montana, who last month introduced Senate Resolution 97, which would declare June 1, 2009, as Collector Car Appreciation Day. The resolution would recognize “that the collection and restoration of historic and classic cars is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of the United States” as well as the fact that automotive restoration “provides well-paying, high-skilled jobs for people in all 50 States.” Unfortunately, the resolution will likely die in committee before the proposed date of the event.

Next, while it doesn’t seem as though H.R.2057, the Motor Vehicle Owners Right to Repair Act of 2009, should be something collector car enthusiasts should care about, the fate of future collectibles hinges on legislation like this (just as it does with cash for clunkers legislation). It’s something observers already point out - if the computers and sensors and other sophisticated systems that power new cars conks out, and nobody has the equipment or training to repair those systems, then how will they become collectible? How will somebody restore a Corvette ZR1 25 years from now if they don’t have access to the car’s trouble code chart? As Bob Barr and Ralph Nader (I know, I know) wrote in a San Francisco Chronicle op-ed piece earlier this week,

While similar legislation has been introduced in previous Congresses but not voted on, it takes on additional urgency in these tough economic times, especially with the closing of many auto dealerships.

This aptly named bill would allow independent repair shops to compete for the business now guaranteed only to dealer-controlled establishments. This is important because car manufacturers now severely limit the number of repair shops that are allowed to have the tools, diagnostic codes and updated repair information essential to being able to repair late-model cars.

It’s easy to say that this won’t affect the ‘67 Corvette in your garage, and so what. And you’d be right. But your son and his son will likely collect significantly different and newer vehicles, vehicles that this legislation would help keep on the road.

Of course, it hasn’t passed yet. Introduced last month, H.R.2057 currently sits in committee. Let’s hope it progresses further.

As for cash for clunkers, the most recent news is that the compromise legislation hammered out a couple weeks ago has now been attached to the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R.2454). Bad news that it’s yet another step toward realization, but at least it’s not on the proposed fast track that some legislators wanted. CNN predicts that the bill will leave committee by the end of the week and head for a vote in either late June or early July. There also comes word that Dianne Feinstein, who doesn’t like the current c4c legislation because it’s not green enough, has proposed her own, more stringent cash for clunkers legislation.

Meanwhile, cash for clunkers continues to attract widespread opposition. The L.A. Times and the New York Times both recently criticized the plan, the United Recyclers Group and the Engine Repower Council joined the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association in issuing statements opposing the legislation, and Mike Bumbeck at Clunkbucket has taken a stance against it:

The throwaways of automotive culture have sparked motoring trends that over time have become part of our cultural fabric and created giant economic engines of their own. Back in the ’40s and ’50s it was kids tearing the fenders off ’30s Fords and hopping up the engines to make gow jobs, or what we now know as hot rods. Affordable Toyota Corollas and talented drivers begat drifting in Japan. The trend has sparked global enthusiasm for precision driving and older rear-drive cars. American drag racers shoehorning high horsepower supercharged engines into all manner of Fiat Topolinos and Willys coupes created the legendary Gassers. Even from the wheezy Volkswagen Beetle sprang industry built up around aftermarket performance and style.
Clunkers and the other castaways of the automotive world are what keeps vintage motoring interesting.

Nobody can tell what direction vintage motoring will take in the future. But I can guarantee you that whatever direction it takes will be severely disrupted and curtailed by a federal cash for clunkers program.

RIDES Magazine's Genesis Is An Apple Fanboy's Dream Car [Sema]

Even with the Three Dimensions body kit, the exterior of the RIDES Magazine Hyundai Genesis looks fairly stock. But step inside and you'll find they've made it an Apple fanboy's dream sedan. The four-door has three Mac computers (including a MacBook Air and two Mac minis), an iPod touch and an iPhone 3G. Passengers in the rear of this Korean command ship will cruise into the SEMA show in techno-geek style with a center console setup that activates the car's electronics. Not to mention they also have access to all three computers by way of two Apple wireless keyboards perched on flip-down tray tables with an 8.4-inch VGA headrest monitor for both rear-seat passengers to play with. Plus, in the trunk there's a totally-useless-while-driving 20" Apple Cinema Display for web surfing, accessing iTunes and, we'd guess, tailgating. Hit the jump for the full press release from RIDES Mag of one of the cars we're most interested to play with at SEMA (if only so that we can check our e-mail).

RIDES MAGAZINE TRANSFORMS HYUNDAI GENESIS SEDAN INTO TECHNOLOGY CENTER ON WHEELS FOR SEMA SHOW 2008

Hyundai Motor America and RIDES magazine are teaming up to develop a customized Hyundai Genesis for the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show. The RIDES Genesis will be the ultimate in technology, style and refinement, containing the latest in technology both inside and out. As added incentive to visit the Hyundai display, 5,000 RIDES Digital Genesis iTunes cards will be distributed from the car's Wi-Fi network during the show at the Las Vegas Convention Center from Nov. 4 – Nov. 7, 2008.

"This Genesis perfectly suits the mobile executive, with multiple Mac computers and its own mobile Wi-Fi network," said Ben Harris, associate publisher, RIDES. "All of the modifications compliment the Genesis' natural attributes and emphasize the sleek look and luxury interior. We are looking forward to the SEMA show and displaying this amazing vehicle."

Inside, the RIDES Genesis will feature the latest in digital accessories including two Mac Mini computers, a MacBook Air, iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, high-speed Wi-Fi internet connection and movie theater-quality surround sound. The trunk will house its own Mac mini computer, a 20-inch Apple Cinema Display and a motorized tray containing the mouse and keyboard for the rear computer. Within the center console will be the iPhone 3G, Mac Book Air laptop and wireless keyboard and mouse for the Mac Mini mounted on the rear deck. Each passenger in the back seat has their own computer with internet connectivity. The 8.4-inch VGA headrest monitors are wrapped in the original leather to maintain the OE look and feel, while the seats contain suede accents.

"Genesis' spacious and ultra-quiet cabin offers an ideal environment to experiment with new in-vehicle information and entertainment systems," said Michael Deitz, manager, Product Development, Hyundai Motor America. "Adding state-of-the-art connectivity and computing power to existing technology like navigation, Bluetooth and satellite radio, this RIDES Genesis offers a glimpse into the future of hi-tech luxury."

At the Hyundai booth, SEMA attendees will view clean exterior modifications to compliment the high-tech interior. Modifications include 22-inch custom-made staggered fitment MHT three-piece wheels, Pirelli tires, custom-molded front body kit and side skirts, lowered suspension and smoked headlights. Custom dual-tip stacked exhausts and custom-molded rear bumper accentuate the metallic silver and blue paint job.

Ford offering employee pricing plus bonus incentive on fuel efficient vehicles

It's tough to be in the auto selling business these days, as evidenced by all of the big deals that automakers are offering to move their metal before the end of the year. Ford has already announced that it would be offering an "Employee Pricing Plus" incentive, and now details of the plan have come to light. Not only can you get the price employees pay, but Ford is also offering additional cash back on many of its models. Or you can get bonus zero-percent financing for 36 months plus the employee price instead of cash back if you choose one of Ford's nine most fuel efficient models in their class. Even the new 2009 F-150, which gets up to 21 mpg when equipped with the SFE package, joins in the zero-percent financing deal. Other models with the financing deal are the Focus, Flex, Fusion/Mercury Milan, Escape/Mercury Mariner (minus the hybrids, naturally) and even the MKS and MKZ from Lincoln. Sure, it's a gimmick that's meant to help sales, but it's tough to complain about a good deal on a new car, right?

What will Obama mean to the auto industry?

Will he bring relief to the Big 3?

I’ve written in this blog that I don’t believe the U.S. auto industry should be bailed out by the federal government. I’m a believer that people and companies need to suffer or be rewarded the appropriate consequences of their actions.

I can see the point, though, that a failed auto industry would wreak havoc on other businesses and cost the country thousands of jobs. That’s certainly not a good outcome, and it’s why the government is considering a bailout.

President-elect Obama addressed the issue briefly in his first news conference, saying, “The auto industry is the backbone of American manufacturing and a critical part of our attempt to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. I would like to see the administration do everything it can to accelerate the retooling assistance that Congress has already enacted.”

That’s an eloquent way of saying he wants to fund a bailout. Obama appears in strong support of a proposed $50 billion bailout package, with $25 billion in direct loans and another $25 billion to come later, intended to help fund a United Auto Workers retiree health care trust.

I’m absolutely thrilled that Obama won the election and am proud to live in an America with him at the helm. I’m also a huge supporter of the auto industry and am a true car-nut. Yet I can’t bring myself to support the bail out of companies that have made poor choices.

Under Obama, the U.S. automakers will likely receive the help they need and avoid bankruptcy. If, that is, they can hold on until President Bush hands over the presidential reins.

My opinion, though, is that Ford, GM, and Chrysler would be better off - and we’d see better vehicles and stronger companies in the future - if they were forced to reorganize themselves under bankruptcy.

Do you agree?

What will Tata Motors do with Jaguar?

Expect great things from Jaguar under Tata

Expect great things from Jaguar under Tata

It’s been a while since we’ve last heard from the new owners of Jaguar. The luxury automaker struggled while under Ford ownership, and new owner Tata Motors has been pretty quiet about their plans for the storied brand.

That has caused some fear in Jaguar loyalists as they wonder how in the world the same company that builds the world’s cheapest car can possibly succeed in doing justice to the elegance of the once-British car company.

Ford really didn’t do any favors to Jag though, attempting to bring the essence of Jaguar luxury to the masses. The result: An entry-level sedan that failed miserably and a mid-size sedan that has ended up on more than one list of ugly cars.

There was even talk at Ford of building a Jaguar SUV.

Tata Motors doesn’t have any experience building luxury automobiles, but I won’t let that stop me from believing they are going to be the savior Jaguar fans have been hoping for.

First of all, Tata plans on moving Jag back up market by deciding against an entry-level sub $40K vehicle. They’ve also firmly backed away from creating an SUV, a move that makes sense considering they also own the SUV king: Land Rover.

Here’s what to watch for in the coming years from the new Jaguar:

-         New V8 engines in early 2009

-         A Supercharged XF-R in mid 2009

-         A redesigned XJ in 2010 (look for XF design cues)

-         In 2011, 2012 and beyond, watch for a possible XF coupe and a smaller roadster to compete with the Porsche Boxster and BMW X4

I think these are exciting times for Jaguar. I predict that we’ll see Jags that are truly luxurious with the performance to match. Tata Motors is a company with a lot to prove, and I’m willing to bet that they won’t let us down.

What do you think: Will Jaguar return to glory under Tata?

Mitsubishi to Debut Three New Models at Detroit Auto Show

Mitsubishevoconcept

Word just came from the North American International Auto Show that Mitsubishi will debut three new models at the 2007 show in Detroit in early January. Already confirmed to make its first public appearance is the Lancer sedan. The considerably redesigned Lancer was one of Mitsubishi’s bread and butter vehicles, but it has aged greatly with only the high-performance Lancer Evolution maintaining a hold on the market. Shown here is the Concept X, a take on the next Evolution model. Expect the more mainstream sedan to have less aggressive front and rear ends, but many of the lines and the overall design itself will most likely find their way to the base Lancer.

As for the other two models, we’re not sure what to expect, but there could be a new Montero full-size SUV — a European version of which is debuting in Paris this week — or even a new Galant sedan. Following today’s news, it sure seems like the 2006 - 07 car show season is in full swing. We’ll keep you updated with the latest news as it comes in.

Update: There will be a new concept of the next generation Lancer Evolution debuting alongside the production Lancer base sedan at the Detroit auto show. The third vehicle will be another concept but Mitsubishi is keeping its identity a secret for now.

New Jaguar XJ - More Details

New Jaguar XJ Rendering

More details have emerged today on the new Jaguar XJ model, with a fantastically detailed piece from CAR Magazine, that is well worth reading. CAR have produced several rendered images, based on a combination of both the recent spyshots of the new XJ running around in disguise, and the top down shot that Jaguar had already officially released, and we have to say there images are easily the best we've seen so far, and likely to be very close to the finished product.

To see the full article we would suggest you pay a visit to CAR magazine yourself by following this link: CAR Magazine Article.

The new XJ, codename X351 is due to be released on 9th July at a reveal in London, and we are expecting several more snippets and teasers to be released by Jaguar UK before this time to whet our appetites for what will be one of the years most anticipated new cars.

Jaguar has also released a video of design Director Ian Callum, talking about the new XJ, in which he goes on to describe the car in more detail - very interesting viewing and you can watch it simply by clicking below:

Bonneville… Part 1

I’ve always known that I was lacking culture. I mean, I’ve done a lot of racing in my life and I’ve done so from the grass roots level all the way up to the big time. BUT, I had never been to Bonneville until this past weekend. The experience changed everything. I know you’ve probably heard that from other folks before, but there is nothing cliche about it. Bonneville is a spiritual exchange between man and machine that I never knew was possible. It’s heaven… on earth… Stepping foot on the salt for the first time induces flashbacks to our history as well as dreams pointing to possibilities for the future. It’s a new world for me.

And it’s a world that I am just not ready to write about yet. Joyo and I experienced so much in such a short period of time that it all hasn’t really sunk in yet. We’ve both been walking around in a sort of daze. There is no salt in Austin. There is no blazing sun. There is no roar of high sprung race motors to talk over. I haven’t figured out how to get along without all of that stuff just yet.

Part 2 of this story will run on Friday… By then, I hope to have my wits about me and be able to tell the story as we lived it. I won’t be able to do it justice. Promise.

2010 Ford Mustang to appear on Knight Rider tomorrow

Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2010 Ford Mustang

Seriously, was there any doubt that this would happen? Here's the skinny, verbatim, from Ford's press release:

The 2010 Mustang will be seen in the episode "Knight of the Zodiac" inside the Satellite Surveillance Chamber, also known as the SSC or "KITT Cave." The 2010 Mustang poses as KITT during an inspection and impresses everyone.

As crazy as it sounds, this particular bit of product placement may be more subtle than the pathetic shilling of Goodyear tires that NBC cooked up for last week's episode, during which KITT actually utters, "The tread is from a Goodyear Assurance ComforTread. It's one of the most popular brands of tires sold and distributed in North America." Somehow, I managed not to immediately kill myself upon hearing that and, as a result, I'll be liveblogging tomorrow night's Knight Rider pony parade. You know where and when to find me.
