Will the Safe 2008 Ford Taurus Save Ford?

Ford is celebrating the return of the Taurus and Mercury Sable nameplates with record-setting scores in government crash safety tests. So now Ford will seek to capitalize on that moniker by marketing the Tauras as the “Safest Car in America.” Am I the only one here who recalls Fords results in making similar claims back in the 1950’s?

In another similarity to the “Safety” aspect of their marketing strategy is the complaints by some that the design of the Ford Taurus/Sable (which replaces in name more than design the Ford Five-Hundred) is too bland and indistinct. Back in the mid to late ’50’s Ford opted for safety and practicality in their cars versus the performance and attitude marketed by Chevy.

However, I wouldn’t be expecting a sudden boon in those sales as they face up against the stylish, redesigned Toyota Camry and the ever popular Honda Accord.

Along with the Taurus and Sable release comes the new Taurus X; formerly known as the Freestyle. While some Ford fans may be celebrating the return of these familiar Ford names, and may even be calling for the return of the Ford Galaxy (Henry, help us!), some warning signs should be flashing. When  an automaker has more in common with Sean, P-Diddy,Diddy, SeanJean, Combs than with the rest of the auto industry…  well that can’t be a good thing.

Only the free market will tell us if the return of the Taurus and Sable will make all the difference for Ford in the years to come. Between the lackluster styling, the familiar names and the marketing strategy of Safety, what is old is truly new again for the Ford Motor Company.
For the sake of all those employed by Ford and its subsidiaries, I truly hope there is Safety in the Taurus.

The Honda Accord Shakes the Hybrid, While Prius Sales Leap Ahead

With the rest of the automotive world talking hybrids, Honda is now saying what is old is new again. After some quiet time in R&D Honda is coming out with a new diesel engine for their Honda Accord in 2008. That diesel will be supplanting the Accord hybrid. With projected fuel consumption estimated to reach 50-60mpg it might seem a legitimate option as Americans seek out ways to decrease their carbon output and decrease their gas expense, but it does fly against the popular trend of hybrids in the market place. A pretty bold move by Honda as the Toyota Prius moved up to being the 6th most sold passenger car in the US for the month of May.

toyota prius may sales record

This year the Toyota Prius hit 10 years old, and to celebrate its birthday Toyota has record numbers of them hitting the dealerships. It used to be you had to pre-order your Prius sight unseen and hope for an early delivery. Today you can actually head to a dealership and put your hands on one. And as the tax incentive on the Prius dwindles Toyota has started to chip in some of their own marketing money with a $2000 rebate.

It will take a few years yet to see which company is betting on the right technology, if there is a right or wrong here. Maybe the most important thing is that the major automakers of the world are finally putting some real money into fuel efficient vehicles instead of engineered behemoths. Now if only one of these major corporations would put out a supercharged diesel sports car with 400-hp that gets 40mpg.

…Ahhh. Dream a little dream.

With its long teardrop fenders and port hole door the Phantom I holds its own even today against modern styling. Originally a convertible this Phantom was sent over to Belgium a few years after it was built where its current body was created by Jonckheere.

Of all the cars that come and go this legend can never be forgotten. And with a mulit-million dollar price tag and remarkable shape, it can never be replaced.

What Do You Think Of The Jaguar C-XF Concept Car?

This Jag concept car was unveiled in January. At the time, I wasn’t sure what I thought about it. But I think I’m mostly underwhelmed. Some of the interior features are nice, but in my opinion, the exterior is too derivative. A little too bulky too. It’s good too see Jaguar moving forward with their designs, but I’m honestly not lusting after this sucker.

What do you think?

Cadillac Converj: Sporty Concept

Planning ahead and seeing the future is one of the best marketing strategies. Given a concept, General Motors showed up its sexy coupe equipped with the Chevy Volt technology. The Cadillac Converj is powered by a 16 kW set of lithium-ion batteries with a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine for recharging purposes only. Yet, the concept raised an issue: 2-door or 4-door? Since 2-door models are tough to sell, GM has the option of making a 4-door version of the Converj concept for production.

Porsche set to raise prices

If you are thinking of buying a brand new Porsche then you need to hurry up and get down to the dealership, because as from 1st August 2007, the price of a new Porsche is set to rise.

porsche

An increase of between 1.4% and 5% will be added across the whole range, but what’s 1.4%? Well when you are spending thousands of dollars it does actually all add up, especially when you have to put on the taxes and other charges too.

The details of the price increases will affect the Boxter S which is going up by a massive 5%, the Caymen S Porsche’s sports utility vehicle will cost 4% more, although the base model will remain the same, you pay your money and take your choice with that one! The legendary Porsche 911 models which include the Carrerra, GT3, GT3 RS will see a price rise of just 1.5%, but those wishing to cruise around in a 911 convertible will only see a rise of mere 1.4%, perhaps that because they save on not having a roof!! But if your are looking for the fantastic 911 Turbo then should be delay your purchase from today to the 1st August then that would cost you around $5,700 extra, that’s with just an increase of only 2.3%.

porsche

There is no mention as to want has brought on these price increases, but it is safe to say that the people who can afford to go out and buy a brand new Porsche in the first place, may not be put off by the increases at all.
