Keeping Car Insurance Rates Low

No matter where you live in the United States, you’re going to find that car insurance rates are extremely high, but instead of paying top dollar, there are some great ways on how you can keep your car insurance rates rather low.  I’m going to give you a few pointers on how you can get the best car insurance rates, no matter where you live.

Compare your rates online

If you have a rate right now, it might be best to compare your rates right now on websites such as Esurance.  These sites will enable you to input information, and they will respond with a few quotes from major companies such as State Farm, and Allstate.  It’s 100% free, and a great way to compare rates since they will all be different.

Get higher deductibles

The higher you go with the deductible, the more you’re going to be able to save.  Keep in mind though if that you do get into an accident per se, you’re going to have to pay a lot more out of your pocket.  Even if you’re a safe driver, you can never rely on the other people on the road.

Get something simple

If you have an older car, and you wouldn’t really care if it was totalled, I would just insure your car with PLD based insurance.  You can save 100s a year, but the only downfall is if you get into an accident, you’ll be required to pay for all the repairs.  Insurance such as PLD is basically for those looking for personal liability protection.

Combine your policies

If you have homeowners insurance, or anything along those lines, you will find that companies will give you a discount if you buy all of your policies with them.  Check with your insurance company, and see if they will do something like that for you if you combine your policies as one.

Just be careful

Yes, if you drive safe, this is going to tell the insurance companies something.  Driving safe will not only lower your premiums, it’s going to be good for your car as well.  Don’t drive recklessly, and don’t drive over the speed limit.  If you can keep this in mind, you can watch your premiums stay rather low.

Try some of these tips above if you’re looking to save money on your insurance rates.  As long as you’re safe on the road, and you look for newer rate quotes each and every year, you should be okay.

Sinister

Go crazy. You can paint it black, add the meanest flames ever taped, slam it to the ground, throw on some huge meats, poke a blower through the hood, etc… It doesn’t matter. NOTHING is as sinister as an early roadster built by a guy with the evilest of intentions. I don’t have the words really, but early cars done in a very specific manner harken back to the killing machines that have kept this country free. They feel like killers. I don’t know if they feel that way because of the inherent danger of driving one HARD is obvious or simply because early mechanicals, exposed and brilliant with simplicity, just remind one of a fighter plane or swift field gunner. Either way, there is no denying it. The ‘26 Model-T above is as sinister as it gets.

I stumbled upon the little roadster while browsing galleries yesterday and can’t get it out of my mind. There are so many neat details and tricks that make the car what it is… I’m in deep, passionate love with a killing machine. No foolin’.

GM struggling to recruit engineers for advanced projects

In order to create the next generation of more efficient transportation, automakers and suppliers need a lot of engineering talent. The problem is the talent pool today is very limited and those that have the necessary skills are tending to find greener pastures than Michigan. The number of American students going into science and engineering has been on the decline as everyone wants to be the next Donald Trump instead of the next Charles Kettering. Kettering, you say? Who's that? That's precisely the problem. Few of the engineers and scientists who have helped shape the industry over the past century have gotten the kind of popular recognition that financial types have gotten.

As a result, students have tended to migrate to biz schools instead of engineering schools. That makes it harder for car makers to get the people they need. Unfortunately, they also partly have themselves to blame as talented engineers in this industry often get left behind when it comes to promote to the management ranks. With little opportunity for advancement past the staff level, many engineers tend to migrate elsewhere after a time. Recently, GM's Dan Hancock and Tom Stephens attended the FIRST Robotics competition to try and entice the students to consider a career in automotive engineering. There are certainly plenty of opportunities right now to work on interesting stuff, but they will have a hard time recruiting until they can demonstrate that the jobs and the companies have some longer term viability. Right now, engineering jobs outside the auto industry look a lot more attractive and that will be a tough perception to change.

The Ultimate Road Trip

Franco, Joyo, Silva, and I were sitting on my back porch this past Saturday night fighting the heat using Mango/Banana Margaritas as ammunition. While losing the battle, Franco mentioned something about “ChevyGirlRox’s” latest series of posts being his favorite H.A.M.B. series of all time. I had no idea what he was talking about… and soon found myself back indoors marveling over one hell of a road trip.

Take a few minutes out of your day today, click on each of the links below, and get lost.

Incredible, right? That’s hot rodding folks. Matt and Megan just showed us all how to do it. From point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ with the least amount of emotional drama possible. It’s an adventure that I’m jealous as hell of.

Matt… Megan… You two are heros.

1971 Imperial LeBaron [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Today's car is one I'm quite familiar with, since it's now sitting in my back yard. No, it isn't my current Personal Hell Project; I'm helping Czech automotive journalist Bobash realize his dream of terrorizing quaint Central European villages with an ocean-liner-scale Fuselage Look Mopar. You may recall the '81 Corvette I inspected for BobAsh a while back; that car is now roaring around the Czech Republic in all its Late Malaise glory.

This car was a one-owner, estate-sale find. The late owner was a San Francisco chiropractor who garaged it, had it serviced on the dot, and (apparently) never allowed anyone to sit inside. It's got a few minor dings and dents, but almost everything works and the (purple whorehouse-esque) interior is the nicest I've ever seen on an unrestored 90,000-mile car.
It's not what you would ever call fast, but the 335-horse 440 gets its 4,855 pounds moving pretty well. Yes, this voluminous dreadnaught is almost - but not quite- a thousand pounds heavier than the bloatmaster 2010 Camaro SS.
I'll be bringing this mighty luxury machine over to the Port Of Oakland for shipping to Bremerhaven as soon as all the spare parts I've ordered finally arrive. Don't feel bad about its leaving the country of its birth; it shall be worshiped as a god in its new home!

Clarkson Says Top Gear America “Canned”

Yes this news is from last week, but I haven’t been reading my e-mail too well lately so it slipped between the cracks. Whoops.

During a press conference for Top Gear Live in Australia, Jeremy was asked about the American version of Top Gear and if he thought it was going to be shown in Australia at all. He replied that the show had been “canned” and that us Americans “just don’t get it”. Now he may have just been referring to NBC passing on the show, but it may also be really dead. I’m not sure as Clarkson isn’t usually the most reliable when it comes to these kinds of things.

California Bans Cell Phone Use While Driving

Cellphone

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will sign a bill today that bans handheld cell phone use while driving. California will be the fourth state to put such a ban in place. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have similar bills. Californians have a while to adjust to the new law, though; it won’t go into effect until July 1, 2008. The law will allow for cell phone use with hands-free devices such as Bluetooth headsets. Fines for breaking the new law will be $20 for the first offense and $50 every time after, but none of the tickets will impact the driver’s insurance. Many cars sold today feature their own built-in hands-free devices, and we’d expect that by July 2008 many more vehicles will come with the technology standard.

The Benefits of Auto Auctions

916494_carLooking for a new vehicle isn’t always easy.   We usually want a specific vehicle, low mileage, a great price, and we want it to be reliable.  Is that so much to ask for?  Sometimes, yes.  Sometimes it takes weeks or even months to find the perfect car for us.  We want to make sure we get a great price, and that we’re not getting ripped off.  So how can we find a great vehicle?

Have you ever heard of, or considered auto auctions?  If not, they can be very beneficial and they may find you a vehicle that you may never of considered.  If you’re new to auto auctions, you just may want to consider attending one.

The Benefits of Auto Auctions:

Deals – You will be surprised at the deals you may find.  They list great vehicles up for auction, and they are usually well looked over, in good shape vehicles for a great deal.

Prices – The prices at the auction are unbelievable.  Cars start as low as $100.00 per vehicle.  If no one wants it, or there are few people there, guess what your chances are of getting that vehicle!  Who knows, you just may walk out of there with a vehicle for under $1,000!

Options – If you’re afraid of going to just see a few vehicles, that are in bad shape, and only a few of the rarer makers, don’t worry!  Auto auctions hold vehicles like Ford, BMW, Land Rover, Mercury, etc.  There are several to choose from, so don’t be afraid of just seeing a few.

With how rough the economy is, this may just be the perfect way to find that new car you’re looking for!  You certainly can’t beat the price of $100!  So, if ever you’re looking for a vehicle, and you’re not happy with what you’re finding, always remember that there are government auto auctions to help you out.

Porsche could evade emissions penalties via VW takeover

Over the last year or so, Porsche has been grabbing chunks of Volkswagen, slowly but surely. It is clear what the German manufacturer of luxurious sportscars is attempting: a takeover of VW, which is the largest automaker in Germany. There are still laws and regulations standing it its way, but Porsche may have the backing of the European Union, which could have the power to change laws currently protecting Volkswagen from a takeover. It has long been assumed that Porsche's plan was to lump its products along with the more fuel efficient models from VW, which could allow the company to avoid paying large fines for not meeting carbon output regulations.

As it stands right now, Porsche seemingly has no choice but to offer more fuel efficient and lower emission models. To that end, it has announced hybrid versions of its Cayenne and upcoming Panamera sedan. Also possible is a diesel engine for its utility vehicle. By gobbling up Volkswagen, Porsche could dial back on these fuel-saving models and get back to its high performance ways without fear of excessive penalties.

Matt Mladin’s Tire Disintegrates During AMA Superbike Race!

Most of the time, when you see a crash during a motorcycle race, it’s because the rider comes into a turn too hot, or because a couple of riders get tangled together and wind up wrecking each other. But I’ve never seen a tire fail as spectacularly as it did on Matt Mladin’s GSX-R 1000, and it’s amazing this wreck wasn’t more serious. Riding one of these vicious racing machines is hard enough when everything is running perfectly, and trying to bring one to a stop with no rubber on the rear wheel must be a nightmare. Here, the seven-time AMA Superbike champion makes it look easy, but it’s safe to say a lesser rider wouldn’t have been able to handle a situation so gracefully. Good thing it was the rear that went, I don’t even want to think about would have happened had the front one disintegrated…

Are Brad Pitt and George Clooney saving the world?

George Clooney and his Tango

George Clooney and his Tango

Few things in life delight me as much as irony.

And when the topic turns to celebrities and their cars, the fodder is nearly unending.

Especially when the talk is about celebrities who ‘go green.’

It’s hard to count the number of celebs who have been seen tooling around tinsel town in a Prius. A few of them are: Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Billy Joel and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Going a step further, George Clooney owns two electric vehicles; a Tango and a Tesla.

Alanis Morisette teamed up with Mercedes and was hooked up with an E320 BlueTec.

While I admire the image these people are trying to convey, I can see through the smoke screen and take a look at the real environmental impact they are making.

While a trip to the grocery store in a Prius might make a great tabloid cover shot, the trip to Namibia in a private jet is kept a bit quieter.

Yet when Brad Pitt jets off to Africa, he flies in a private jet and burns 11,000 gallons of jet fuel to travel about 9,000 miles. Let’s see… what is that… 0.8 miles per gallon? Way to save the Earth, Brad!

Burning 11,000 gallons of fuel in a Prius could get Pitt all the way to the MOON.

And most of the way back.

It’s the same story with other celebs, though props go to Leo DiCaprio for flying commercial airlines whenever possible.

Aside from the private jets, the cars many of these people owned before making the switch to hybrid means they have a lot of ground to make up before their carbon footprint evens out.

For  example, Cameron Diaz had a Porsche 911 Carrera and a Mercedes SL. Brad Pitt has been seen in an Audi Q7 and a Nissan Quest (yup, a minivan for Mr. Cool).

And now anti-establishment rocker Alanis Morisette drives an eco-friendly diesel? As her song goes, isn’t it ironic!

So what do you think: Are celebs in eco-friendly cars driving them for the Earth or treating them as fashion accessories?

Honda Finds New Way to Produce Ethanol

Hondalogo

Honda has teamed up with a Japanese research firm to develop a new way of producing ethanol fuel. Previously made from either corn or sugarcane, ethanol has been an increasing hot topic among automakers, environmentalists and politicians, but overall it is still costly to produce with little infrastructure in the United States.

Honda has at least figured out the production problem. Converting corn and sugarcane into ethanol yielded little fuel given the amount of raw material used, and it also saps food stocks. The new method uses inedible and discarded plant material and is vastly more efficient. Honda is planning to produce an ethanol-capable vehicle for the Brazilian market, but major U.S. automakers like Ford and General Motors already have hundreds of thousands of flex-fuel vehicles on the road now that can run on either ethanol or gasoline.

Honda hasn’t been promoting its ethanol plans, and the company is better known for its gasoline hybrids. One Honda spokesman said ethanol could account for 30% of fuel in the U.S. by 2025. If this new process can be widely adopted, we’re ready to believe that number.

Cadillac Converj: Sporty Concept

Planning ahead and seeing the future is one of the best marketing strategies. Given a concept, General Motors showed up its sexy coupe equipped with the Chevy Volt technology. Since 2-door models are tough to sell, GM has the option of making a 4-door version of the Converj concept for production.
